แก่งคันสูง เกิดจากลานหินกว้างที่กั้นขวางลำน้ำโขง ตั้งอยู่บริเวณตำบลโคกสาร อำเภอชานุมาน โดยฝั่งตรงข้ามจะเป็นสาธารณรัฐประชาธิปไตยประชาชนลาว ที่แก่งคันสูงจะสามารถเห็นเกาะแก่งกลางน้ำได้เฉพาะในช่วงหน้าน้ำลดเท่านั้น และถ้าปีไหนที่น้ำลดมาก ๆ จะสามารถเดินข้ามฝั่งแม่น้ำโขงได้เลยทีเดียว (แต่ห้ามขึ้นฝั่งประเทศลาว)
บริเวณแก่งคันสูงจะมีเพิงหลังคามุงจากหลังเล็ก ๆ ตั้งไว้บริการนักท่องเที่ยวริมแก่งประมาณ 20-40 หลัง มีร้านค้า ร้านอาหารครบครัน ซึ่งก็มีหลากหลายเมนูให้เลือกสรร ใครชอบนั่งกินใต้ต้นไม้หรือบริเวณเพิงริมแก่งเอาขาจุ่มน้ำก็เลือกได้ตามความชอบใจ นอกจากการนั่งรับลมเย็น ๆ ที่นี่แล้ว นักท่องเที่ยวยังสามารถที่จะลงไปเล่นน้ำในลำน้ำโขงได้อีกด้วย ซึ่งก็เป็นกิจกรรมคลายร้อนที่ฮอตฮิตมาก ๆ แต่ถ้าใครว่ายน้ำไม่เป็นก็จะมีบริการเช่าห่วงยาง โดยนักท่องเที่ยวจะต้องเล่นน้ำอยู่ในพื้นที่ที่เจ้าหน้าที่กำหนด เพราะกระแสน้ำค่อนข้างไหลแรง และถ้าพ้นจากแก่งคันสูงไปแล้วก็จะเป็นลำน้ำโขงที่กว้างและลึกพอสมควร เพราะฉะนั้นต้องระมัดระวังทั้งตนเองและเด็กเล็ก แต่ถ้าใครเบื่อกับการนอนแช่น้ำสุดเย็นฉ่ำ ก็ยังมีบริการสปีดโบ๊ทสุดมันส์ และเช่าจักรยานให้ปั่นเพลินๆ ไปตามเส้นทางเล็กๆ บริเวณริมแก่งด้านบน
