ก่อนจะมาเป็นวัดถ้ำผาหมากฮ่อ นับย้อน หลังไป ๕๘ ปี เริ่มจากปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๒ ดินแดน แห่งนี้แต่ก่อนเป็นป่าดงดิบอันหนาทึบ มีสัตว์ป่า อาศัยอยู่หนาแน่น มีทั้ง เสือ หมี เก้ง กวาง เลียงผา งูพิษ และสัตว์ร้ายนานาชนิด มีชาวบ้าน ไม่กี่ครอบครัวที่เข้ามาทำไร่ในแถบนี้ โดยมาแต่ เช้าตรู่ พอถึงบ่าย ๓ โมง ก็ต้องรีบกลับบ้านเพราะ เกรงอันตรายจากสัตว์ร้าย ผี ผีป่า หรือนางไม้ ซึ่งเป็นความเชื่อของคนในยุคนั้น อาจเป็นเพราะ ขาดสิ่งที่ยึดเหนี่ยวทางจิตใจ
วัดถ้ำผาหมากฮ่อ ตั้งอยู่ ตำบลศรีสงคราม อำเภอวังสะพุง จังหวัดเลย หากเดินทางจากทางตัวเมือง ใช้เส้นทางหมายเลข 201 ถนนมลิวรรณ ไปยังอำเภอวังสะพุง ประมาณ 30 กิโลเมตร ผ่านศูนย์หม่อนไหมเฉลิมพระเกียรติฯ จังหวัดเลย ไป 300 เมตร จากนั้นเลี้ยวขวาผ่านประตูโขงเข้าไปเรื่อยๆ ก็จะถึงวัด

Wat Tham Pha Mak Ho is located in Tambon Si Songkhram. Wang Saphung District, Loei Province, if traveling from the city Take route number 201, Maliwan Road to Wang Saphung District for about 30 kilometers, passing the Mulberry Silk Center in Loei Province for 300 meters, then turn right through the Mekong Gate and keep going until you reach the temple.
