กระชายดำ ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์: Kaempferia parviflora (KP) หรือว่านกำบัง ว่านจังงัง เป็นพืชที่อยู่ในวงศ์ Zingiberaceae เป็นไม้ล้มลุก ลำต้นมีปุ่มปม ลักษณะคล้ายกระชาย แต่เนื้อในหัวเป็นสีม่วง เมื่อแก่สีจะเข้มขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ผิวด้านนอกสีเหลือง ใบเดี่ยว แทงขึ้นมาจากหัวใต้ดิน ดอกช่อ ออกที่ปลายยอด สีขาวแต้มชมพู
เป็นพืชที่มีสรรพคุณเป็นยาสมุนไพร สารสกัดจากกระชายดำมีฤทธิ์ต้านเชื้อมาลาเรีย เชื้อราและไมโครแบคทีเรีย ต้านการเกิดโรคภูมิแพ้และต้านการเกิดแผลในกระเพาะอาหาร ในสัตว์ทดลองพบว่า มีฤทธิ์ขยายหลอดเลือดแดงที่ถูกแยกออกจากกายของหนูขาว และสร้างไนตริกออกไซค์(NO) บริเวณเยื่อบุหลอดเลือดดำของรกเด็ก กระชายดำในประเทศไทยที่มีชื่อเสียงอยู่ที่จังหวัดเลย นอกจากนั้นยังเชื่อว่าเป็นยาบำรุงกำลัง นักรบสมัยก่อนจะนำหัวไปปลุกเสกแล้วอมเวลาต่อสู้ เชื่อว่าทำให้คงกระพัน
กระชายดำแตกต่างจากกระชายทั่วไป (ที่ใช้เป็นเครื่องแกง) คือ กระชายทั่วไปใช้ส่วนที่เป็นราก (tuber) ซึ่งงอกออกมาจากเหง้า (ลำต้นที่อยู่ใต้ดิน) มีกาบใบและใบซ้อนโผล่ขึ้นอยู่เหนือดิน ส่วนกระชายดำมีลำต้นอยู่ใต้ดิน (rhizome) หรือที่เรียกกันทั่วไปว่าหัว ลักษณะคล้ายขิง หรือขมิ้นแต่มีขนาดเล็กกว่า ใบใหญ่และมีสีเขียวเข้มกว่ากระชายทั่วไป ขนาดใบกว้างประมาณ 7 – 15 ซม. ยาว 30 – 35 ซม. ใบมีกลิ่นหอม ประกอบด้วยกาบใบมีสีแดงจาง ๆ และหนาอวบ กำเนิดมาจากหัวที่อยู่ใต้ดิน ลำต้นมีความสูงประมาณ 30 ซม.
ดอกออกจากยอด ช่อละหนึ่งดอก มีใบเลี้ยง ดอกมีสีชมพูอ่อน ๆ ริมปากดอกสีขาว เส้าเกสรสีม่วง เกสรสีเหลือง กลีบรองกลีบดอกเชื่อมติดกันมีลักษณะเป็นรูปท่อ มีขน โคนเชื่อมติดกันเป็นช่อยาว เกสรตัวผู้จะเหมือนกับกลีบดอก อับเรณูอยู่ใกล้ปลายท่อ เกสรตัวเมียมีขนาดยาวเล็ก ยอดของมันเป็นรูปปากแตรเกลี้ยงไม่มีขน หัวมีสีเข้ม แตกต่างกัน ตั้งแต่สีม่วงจาง ม่วงเข้ม และดำสนิท (ยังไม่ทราบแน่ชัดว่า ความแตกต่างของสีขึ้นอยู่กับสิ่งแวดล้อม อายุ หรือพันธุกรรม) สีของหัวเมื่อนำไปดองสุราจะถูกฟอกออกมา
พันธุ์ในปัจจุบันยังไม่มีการรวบรวมและจำแนกพันธุ์อย่างเป็นทางการ แต่หากจำแนกตามลักษณะของสีของเนื้อหัว พอจะแยกได้ 3 สายพันธุ์ คือ สายพันธุ์ที่มีเนื้อหัวสีดำ สีม่วงเข้ม สีม่วงอ่อนหรือสีน้ำตาล
ส่วนใหญ่แล้ว จะพบกระชายที่มีสีม่วงเข้มและสีม่วงอ่อน ส่วนกระชายที่มีสีดำสนิทจะมีลักษณะหัวค่อนข้างเล็ก ชาวเขาเรียกว่า กระชายลิง ซึ่งมีไม่มากนักจัดว่าเป็นกระชายที่มีคุณภาพเป็นที่ต้องการของตลาด

ระชายดำสามารถขยายพันธุ์โดยใช้แง่งหรือเหง้าซึ่งเป็นส่วนของลำต้นใต้ดิน โดยทั่ว ๆ ไปจะใช้ส่วนของเหง้าเป็นท่อนพันธุ์ในการปลูก กระชายดำชอบดินร่วนซุย ไม่ชอบน้ำขังหรือดินที่มีการระบายน้ำไม่ดีเนื่องจากจะเน่าเสียโดยเฉพาะดินที่มีสภาพเป็นกรด เมื่อมีฝนชุกหรือความชื้นในดินสูง จะทำให้เกิดโรคเหง้าเน่า สามารถปลูกกลางแจ้งจนถึงมีแสงแดดพอควร ส่วนต้นเหนือดินมักจะยุบหรือแห้งเมื่อเข้าฤดูแล้ง ส่วนใหญ่จะเก็บเหง้าแก่เมื่ออายุ 10-11 เดือนหลังปลูก สีของกระชายดำถึงจะเข้มเต็มที่
